Atherton

Atherton

Named after Faxon Atherton, a wealthy hide and tallow trader from Chile who bought over 600 acres and built the first mansion (...the first of what would become in the twenty first century many mansions) in the area. Atherton is rich in unique history and in its character and is about aesthetics from the flatlands and toward the western hills featuring heritage trees, elegant gardens and a sense of exclusiveness not felt in nearby towns. There are 49 miles of roads in Atherton and about 2500 households with no industry or business in the town. Residents shop in adjacent Menlo Park, Redwood City or nearby Palo Alto.

Students attend private schools or schools in the Menlo Park/Las Lomitas elementary school districts, Redwood City school district and the Sequoia Union High School District. The local private high school, Menlo Atherton, scores well competitively and is supported by the community through school bonds.
